he’ll be damned if he leaves his family unprotected.”

That was all the confirmation I needed. During my time in the cell, it had occurred to me that maybe my parents had played a part in Nyx’s plan and all doubt had just been erased.

I wanted to be able to lay the blame entirely at Nyx’s feet, but my parents were equally responsible. As was always the case, it came down to themselves and their fucking image.

“This is crazy! I have to get out of here!” I whispered as we entered the main corridor of the packhouse.

“Go!” Jenny urged, taking Junior’s arm off my shoulders, and bearing his entire weight. “My parents have sent a car for us, we’ll be fine. You get yourself out of here and don’t look back. Find a way to contact us when all three of you are settled far, far away from here.” She made a point of glancing down at my stomach.

“Thank you!” I sobbed, getting ready to leave.

“Bag,” Junior croaked, pointing to the suitcase that had been left in the doorway behind us.

“It’s the jewellery and money from the safe,” Jenny explained. “Take it and go. Be safe, be happy, and never look back.”

“Thank you again,” I called over my shoulder, wasting no time in taking her up on her offer. I retrieved the suitcase and ran back to them both, giving them both an enormous hug as I whispered to them my gratitude. “I don’t even know how to begin to repay you for this I--”

“For fuck’s sake woman, go!” Jenny shouted, giving me a shaky smile to take away some of the harshness of her words. I smiled back and took off, refusing to look back lest my heartbreak any further.

I ran through the packhouse and straight out the doors, heading for the one dirt road out of here.

“Viiiiolet!” I heard my mother screech; her voice was barely recognisable.

I turned around.

I slapped a hand to my mouth as I saw her, disgusted by the damage she had done to herself.  The skin on her cheek was flapping as she shook her head at me, the puss oozing from the wound.

It was only when I glanced down that I noticed she was holding a gun – aimed straight at my stomach.

“If you leave here now, Violet, you’ve chosen your side. We’ll show you no mercy. Your mate and baby will die tonight, but you don’t have to join them. Don’t make the wrong choice.”

She cocked the barrel of the gun.

“There’s no choice. Goodbye, mother.”

I ran as fast as my legs would carry me, hearing her cursing and ferocious screams. I ducked behind a car as I heard a shot fire out, my heart pounding wildly in my chest.

She was fucking crazy!

I shot to my feet and ran again, trusting my instincts to guide me out of here.

“I’m coming, Khaos,” I called over the bond, not knowing whether he could hear me. I sent a silent prayer to the Moon Goddess for everything to work out and to be reunited with my mate.

I couldn’t stand to lose him now, not after everything.

Chapter 29

Violet

I ran until my lungs felt as though they would burst out of my chest, my heart beating wildly, and even then, I pushed myself further. I relied on the bond between Khaos and me to lead me in the right direction, feeling his pain grow stronger with every mile that passed.

Eventually, I came across the small waterfall I had hidden behind so many weeks ago and knew Khaos was close by. I called out to him, my voice dry and hoarse but strong with determination.

As always, my fierce warrior would never show weakness - he emerged from the trees, standing tall and proud, trying to hide his injuries from me.

In a sudden burst of energy, I threw myself at him, instantly caught up in his strong arms as he held me close, his nose pressed deep into my hair.

“Thank the Goddess you’re okay!” I mumbled, tears soaking his shirt as I sobbed my relief. “What happened?” I pulled back slightly to cup his face in mine, hating the pain I saw in his eyes.

“Nyx happened. She was behind it all, Violet. The attack on the pack, your mother’s hatred towards me. She orchestrated everything.”

“I knew it, Goddess, I knew she was behind this!” I ran my hands over his body to inspect his wounds for myself since he was determined to hide them from me. “What did she do to you?” I demanded, sucking in my breath when I lifted his shirt and saw the gaping wound in his side, the flesh around it seared from the burning silver. “Khaos… This isn’t healing!” I whispered, my voice barely audible.

He turned his neck to the side so I could see the full extent of the slash on his neck. “None of them are, little one. This wasn’t her first Rodeo; she knew what she was doing and came armed to kill.”

“We have to find you a doctor, we need to get the silver out of this!” Instead of responding, he cocked his head to the side, his ears pricking with awareness as he picked up on something.

“What happened at your mother’s pack?” He demanded. I wasted no time telling him everything, watching his lips tighten until they were enclosed in a vivid ring of white.

“She barely left my brother alive, but he came to me and he gave me this,” I held the bag containing every piece of precious jewellery my mother owned, as well as all the money that had been in the safe.

Once again, he wasn’t listening to me. He was focused on the horizon, his face pale and worried.

“We need to get out of here, Violet. Now!”

He wrapped
