Parchman, стр. 33
‘Is that it?’ said McGregor. ‘Is that the sign? He looked up at you Logan. Is that it?’
‘I don’t know,’ said Logan. He looked up to the guard tower for some kindof clue from Jay, but Jaywas no longer there. ‘Jay!,’ he shouted, but no response. ‘Let’s move down to the main gates just in case.’
‘Just in case,’ McGregor huffed.
Logan and the others ran down the steps and watched the two leadersconversing in whispers only a foot from each other. ‘Can anyone see whatthey are they saying? And where’s Jay and Xander?’ Logan asked lookingaround the courtyard behind him. ‘Everyone get ready,’ he shouted to therest of the group. ‘You ready?’ he looked into Tallulah’s eyes.
‘Yes, I’m ready,’ she replied.
Logan turned back to the gate and looked through at the Professor.Whatever the Commander General was telling him had obviously meantsomething to the Professor from the look on his face.’What was he sayingthat was so important?’ he thought to himself.
The Professor turned and smiled one last time at Logan. He put his handto his lapel and removed the microphone Jay had put there and spun backto the Commander General. Then there was nothing but debris flyingeverywhere.
The explosion blast shook the prison.
The Professor had sacrificed himself to take out the Commander General. That was the signal. Logan didn’t have time to comprehend what had justhappen. They pushed open the gates and everyone from within the prisonstarted running towards the Commander General’s army, weapons aloft, screaming.
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Logan led the front of pack, running towards the Commander General’sarmy like a flock of birds flying south for winter. He exuded confidencein the men and women behind him and his battle cry resonated throughevery one of them. Tallulah was only a few feet behind him. She wasfearless and unafraid of whatever was going to happen next. The rest ofthe boys and Nathaniel were not far behind.
McGregor and Jackal followed up the rear with the rest of the community, inmates and Jackals gang. There were men, woman, old and young readyto fight for the person next to them. Some of whom they had only metminutes ago.
Some of the soldiers running towards them broke rank to make the firstcontact with their enemy, whilst others held back in formation in case thecivilians unexpectedly broke through their first line of defense.
Armed with guns, knives and in fact anything that could possibly be usedin battle Logan’s militia clashed with the soldiers. Whilst the soldiers hadexperience on their side their opposition had brute force, courage and morethan anything the motivation to save their way of life.
Logan ran into the foremost soldier in his line of sight and as their bodiesand fists came together it felt like an earthquake as two immovable objectssmashed into each other, neither giving an inch. Bouncing away from theother man Logan pulled his gun and shot him before he could evenwithdraw his pistol and in one movement continued forward to the nextassailant.
There was no time for pain and a carefully place knife strike from anoncoming lieutenant cut his arm. It was hot like fire, but it only made theadrenaline pump harder as he pulled his own knife and plunged it into the man’s chest. He ducked down as more men passed by him with othertargets in their sight.
There was no time to stop and he was still a long way away from the bulkof the army. A glance behind saw that the others were doing their jobs too.Tallulah struck down a man with her sword and in one clean motionremoved the man’s handgun by cutting his hand off by the wrist as easy asslicing through a ham.
She knelt down as one of the oncoming men bounded towards her thinkingshe was an easy target only for him to watch the sword glimmer as it wentup through the inside of his thigh deep and into his abdomen. No mercygiven.
Another man, this time the Commander General’s Lieutenant came for herand her blade struck his cheek. The man jumped backwards away from theone on one fight but maintained his ground, whilst the oncoming infantrypassed him by. The Lieutenant touched his cheek before retreating back tothe safety of the ranks who hadn’t yet been ordered forward.
Logan drove onward with both his guns now drawn and carefully pickinghis targets as the men in front of him started to thin out. The bulk of thefirst wave had passed him by and were fighting with the others behind him.His gun smoked as each bullet left his guns and made contact. Gun firewas being returned but thankfully it had somehow avoided him so far. Logan stood tall and took aim, ensuring he hit his targets lethally eachtime.
Another soldier got close enough to make contact and Logan felt his lungswinded as the man put both forearmsinto Logan’s midriff. Logan rolledover backwards but back onto his feet. The man had no gun but washolding his knife ready for hand to hand combat. Logan made a grab forhis gun, but the man kicked it away. His other gun was nowhere to be seen.
Logan pulled his knife out from its sheath on his ankle and mirroring theman in front of him they circled each other looking for a way to get closeenough to make a deadly strike before the other could counter. Each ofthem feigned attacking before stepping back to allow the other to make amistake. The man was quick and the sound of his knife through the airclose to Logan’s face made Logan jump backwards. He touched his faceand saw blood on his fingers. First blood to the soldier.
Logan felt his whole-body pumping blood now from
