All In (Keep Breathing Book 2), стр. 68
“Yeah, I guess I have,” I mutter.”
"I would say you're lucky," Dr. Peters says as the nurse rips off the old bloody bandages.
"Lucky," I scoff. "I didn't know getting hit by a car was lucky."
By the time I saw the car coming, I couldn't move out of the way. The man driving the jeep ran the red light, my only luck as the doctor says, was he wasn't speeding into the intersection. He slammed on his breaks right before he hit me and sent me to the pavement.
"You could've been roadkill. Instead, you only got two cracked ribs and road rash."
"Right." I rest back in the bed. Breathing hurts and my knee is killing me, which is swollen from all the running.
Fuck, I wish the car knocked me out.
Or maybe worse, so I wouldn’t have to deal with anything.
"My knee is killing me too,” I groan.
“Yes, I noticed it was inflamed when you came in, but the x-ray didn’t show any broken bones. Ice it, along with the ribs. I will prescribe you some hydrocodone, to help with the cracked ribs.
Only hours ago, I was dying for a drink and now I'm getting an offer for pain meds. My old friends. Talk about a fucking sign.
"Um."
I don't get a chance to finish answering him when the curtain slides back and Jax and River step into the room.
"Why the fuck are you stepping into traffic, dumbass."
"Nice to see you too, moron."
"I'll come back with your discharge papers and fill your scrip." Dr. Peters chuckles softly at us and leaves the room. The nurse finishes putting the last bandage on and tells me she will be back to go over the breathing treatments.
"What are you doing here?"
"The hospital called and said you were hit by a car. We rushed over. They wouldn't tell us anything, but we heard your big mouth talking so we figured you were fine."
"Jax." River whacks him.
"I guess I'm your emergency contact. It's sweet and all, but where is Holly?"
"Not here."
Jax and River share a look. "Why?" Jax shoots his eyes back to me.
"Because I needed to be away from them. From her."
"Shit, did you break up?"
"No.” I sigh. “I don't want to talk about it right now."
“Alright. Whatever.” Jaxson plops down in the plastic seat and pulls River to his lap. His hands wrap over her stomach and she places her hands on top of his. I roll my eyes at their obvious display. Jax let it slip the other day that River is pregnant, but they were waiting to tell everyone. Watching them now, they're not hiding it well. Also, at the same time, I can't help but feel envious of their relationship.
“You don't have to stay,” I say roughly and turn away from them.
“We're fucking here now,” Jax grumbles back.
I ignore him and stare at the curtain waiting for the doctor to return with my meds, so I can get out of here.
“What happened?”
“Car.”
“Don’t be a dick,” Jax says gruffly. “Like fucking seriously.”
“The guy ran a light as I was crossing. I flew a couple feet on impact, but I’ll be alright. The guy driving felt like shit. I’m pretty sure he had a panic attack after he saw what he did.”
“Did they give you something for pain?”
“No. I turned it down when I came in.” Here we go.
Jax eyes me skeptically but nods. “Good.” He picks up one of the wrapped tongue depressors and looks wickedly at River. “You wanna play doctor when we get home?”
“You two make me sick,” I groan and roll my head to the other side as I wait to get out of this hell.
It takes another hour before I’m cleared to go home. I manage to pocket the pain meds before Jax sees what I got. I feel like a child hiding shit from his parents. The two of them drive me back to my place and no matter how much I argue with them that I will be alright on my own and try to make them leave, they follow me inside. I knew it wouldn’t be easy.
River flings open the fridge the second she gets in the house and shakes her head at the empty shelves. “I was going to make you dinner, but you don’t have anything in here. I thought a woman lived here now.” She closes the door.
“We haven’t been to the store,” I mumble. “I’m sure there is mac and cheese.”
Matty’s favorite. Again, my stomach clenches at the thought.
River frowns as she glides back over to me. “Well, I am going to pick up dinner. Does the patient have any special requests?" River asks as she places a hand on my cheek.
"Whatever you get is fine. You’re the pregnant one."
River smacks Jaxson in the stomach, making him ‘oofh.’ “I should have known you would tell him. Bigmouth.”
“You think I was going to keep it a secret from my boy?” Jax laughs rubbing his stomach.
“But I expect you to tell me you told him.” She rolls her eyes and turns back to me. “How about I get you something you like,” she tells me. “Maybe a double chocolate cake from Neptune’s.”
“Sounds perfect.” Now I have to wonder if she’s going clear across to the other side of town to give me and Jax time to talk.
“Now, get some rest.” She gives Jaxson a kiss and then heads out the door.
"Shit," I mumble as I fall into the corner of my couch trying to find a comfortable
