All In (Keep Breathing Book 2), стр. 62
We all fear the worst, but Ryan hasn’t given up yet.
Ryan greets me with a nod, with his trusty Close Protection Officer behind him. He falls to my couch, his leg bouncing a mile a minute as we fill him in on what we have in connection on trying to find a lead to his wife’s whereabouts. The report isn’t good.
As I listen to Jax and Sam fill Ryan in and watch his reaction. I put myself in his shoes and the thoughts make me sick. I wouldn’t know what I would do if I lost Holly and Matty. That is when it becomes clear as day to me that I’m in love with her. I’ve known it deep down for a while, but seeing this destroyed broken man in front of me solidifies it. The thought makes it hard to breathe and I step back to loosen my tie. This isn’t about me. I have her.
"How is there still nothing?" Davis asks, pulling at his unkempt hair. "There has to be a trace of Mike Edelman somewhere." Mike Edelman is an ex-employee of Davis’ who was seen on video taking his wife out of the house the night she went missing.
"We are doing what we can," Jaxson starts and Davis' eyes flare.
"It's not good enough," he roars as he rises to his feet.
"I know it's not, but unfortunately we are tracing a ghost. As we know there is someone working with Edelman. It’s a matter of figuring out who, but it’s taking time to find a connection. Edelman hid his tracks well," Jaxson tells him. He's been working relentlessly on this, but I know it has been hard on him as well. It might not be the same, but I know it triggers when River's dad made her leave him and vanish with barely a trace for years. Jax became bitter and vengeful wanting to get even at the person who took away the person he loved the most, much like Ryan.
"But I need you to figure it out," Davis grits out, but it's not anger. It's hopelessness. “The FBI told me next to them you would be the best to figure this out. It’s why I’m here. I’m trusting you.”
"It has to be someone close to you." Sam steps in. "Who could walk into your home and not raise flags."
"I don’t know! We’ve been through everyone and they don't have any connection to Edelman or when he laundered money from me. No one else was caught on tape."
"We're still digging. If he's using aliases it makes this harder, but hopefully, he makes a mistake soon. His face is posted everywhere. It’s only a matter of time before he messes up." I try my best to reassure him, but I know it’s only falling on deaf ears.
"I need to find her." He marches for the door. "Ginny is the blood that keeps my heart pumping. I only want to meet when there is something to go on. I have my IT working on this as well. They'll be in contact if they find anything." Davis flings open the door and walks out, his CPO right behind him.
Once the door clicks closed, I lean against my desk and run my hands through my hair. This is a mess, and I almost feel like his case might be too much for my company to take on.
“I’m going to go back to my office and try to dig through Edelman’s old IP’s and retrace some old calls before Genevieve disappeared. Maybe we have missed something,” Sam says, typing away on her tablet. She’s also been working tirelessly at this since we picked it up, and it’s pissing her off that this man has been a mystery to track.
“I’ll be in after I make a few calls.” I let her know, but she just nods and heads out.
"That man is hanging on by strings," Jax says and falls into a chair. "I'm not sure how long he has before he snaps."
"I don't even want to imagine what hell he is going through." I let out a heavy sigh. The thoughts of Holly and Matty surging through my mind again.
"I have a bit of an idea." Jax rubs his tattooed hands on his jeans. I know he's remembering the years he was without River.
"I know." I pat his shoulder.
“So, how are things with you and Holly?"
"I've fallen for her," I mumble.
"I already know that. You have that dumbass loved up look on your face. It matches mine." Jax laughs.
"I want to ask her to move in, but I think it might freak her out."
"Probably. You should slow it down a little. Holly's great and all and she's the mother of your child, but it's only been a couple months, dude."
"I know." I push my hands through my hair. "I just want her close."
"I think all this stuff with Davis has you overthinking and overdoing."
"You're probably right."
I know he’s right, but it doesn’t make the feeling of wanting her by my side any less pressing. She’s the one I want to spend the rest of my days with. Settle down with and make a home. At first, when the thought entered my mind, it was late at night and she was sleeping beside me. I broke into a cold sweat and wondered if her and forever was something I could do. But the thought of not having her or Matty is worse.
There's a knock on my door and Mary pops her head in. "Mr. Morgan, your brother is calling for you."
"Do you know what he wants?"
"No sir."
"Tell him I'm busy and we'll talk later."
