Out of Nowhere, стр. 19
Chapter 15
Vicky didn’t really have the money to spend but she took a cab home. She needed to get herself together before it was time to pick up Angel from daycare in a couple of hours. When she arrived home she just sat down on her couch feeling numb. She didn’t think she had any tears left until she felt them roll down her cheek. She hadn’t felt this awful since the death of her mother. Twenty minutes later there was knocking on her door. Powerful men always seemed to want what they couldn’t have. The knocking turned into pounding. “Vicky, I know you are in there so please let me in. Please let me explain. I’m not going anywhere until you let me inside” Jason stood outside the door. He must have rushed after her as soon as she left CkR International to get there so fast. He turned his back to the door and slid to the ground. “If you won’t let me inside to explain then I’ll explain from right here for all of your neighbors to hear.” Vicky was silent but reluctantly listening. What could he say really to change the facts? “When we first met I thought you were the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen. I felt an immediate connection to you. I saw your eyes and knew I had to meet you. I asked myself who was the woman with the soft and beautiful brown eyes. But, you ran out of the elevator before I could even get your name. So, when I saw you walking in the rain I thought this was my chance to meet you and maybe get a few cool points for being chivalrous. When you got in the car and we started talking I knew my goose was cooked. Although, I didn’t know your life story I knew I wanted to get to know you. Then, you told me you had a daughter. My mind started to race because I thought there was some lucky bastard somewhere out here waiting for you. When I found out there was no husband or boyfriend that was the moment I decided if you were half the woman I thought you were, I wanted you to be a part of my life. Strange, crazy, & insane all wrapped into one considering we’d just met. You just showed up out of nowhere at a time where I’d been feeling adrift. I didn’t care that you had a daughter. I hoped I could win her over too. When I found out that you didn’t know who I was I was like a kid in a candy store. I know it was selfish of me but my whole life I’ve met people who only wanted something from me. You didn’t even know who I was Vicky. That meant, if I could make you fall in love with me, then it would be the real deal. As time got away from me I won’t lie and say I wasn’t nervous about how you would fit into my world but it wasn’t because I was ashamed of you. It was because I would do anything to protect you and Angel from hurt and harm. There will be people who won’t approve of us being together. They will hate it because you don’t have the right pedigree. They will hate it because they will think you’re only in it for the money. And yes, some will even hate it because you’re black. I don’t care about any of that. I know the truth. I just want to be with you because I love you. She couldn’t believe she’d heard him correctly. Vicky stood up and walked over to the door and asked him “What did you say?” “I love you Vicky Martin”. Jason could tell she’d walked over to the door and was listening. He had to make her believe him or he would lose her. “Yes. I love you Vicky Martin. I just hope you can forgive me and love me back”. That is when Vicky opened the door. Jason saw the tears streaming down her cheeks. He never wanted to be the one to hurt her. He
