Remington's Sky, стр. 42

but I can’t get into the hospital until the suspension is over. My access to everything has been revoked.”

Nia nodded. “Okay. I’ll subpoena the notes from that night. Alright, tell me everything from the moment you were called in to consult on the case. Don’t leave out any detail. By the time I’m done, they’ll need to change the name of St. Lucia’s hospital to Sky Kirby Memorial.” She took Sky’s coffee out of her hand and took a sip. “You might want to make yourself another cup and get comfortable because we’ve got a lot to cover.”

Chapter 22

Remington arrived at the hospital under a barrage of flashing lights from the media and paparazzi. He barreled his way inside and strode directly over to Charlie. “Are you okay?” He hadn’t even noticed Bella standing off to the side.

Charlie’s outstretched arms reached for him. “What’s happening? What’s going on?”

“We’re moving you to a new hospital.”

“But, why?” She looked genuinely confused.

“Because it’s best,” Bella spoke. “Where have you been, REMI? It’s been a madhouse.”

It took everything within him not to strangle her. “No thanks to you and your damned press conference!”

“I finally had the courage, to tell the truth, REMI! I know you’re upset about the situation, but how do you think I feel. It was my husband she was sleeping with! Not to mention, he did this! He did this to our little girl.”

His voice was low and menacing. “You’re a piece of work. Sky wasn’t sleeping with Kane, and you know it! But even if she were, that’s your first concern? Not the so-called abuse? Not Kane causing Charlie’s accident? Makes me wonder if any of it is true. I find it hard to believe that Kane abused you. But you both better hope like hell he didn’t touch a hair on Charlie’s head because if he did, he’s a dead man walking.”

Remington turned to Charlie to ask if the abuse allegations were true.

Bella cut him off. “It’s true! He confessed the entire thing during our last argument. I was afraid for my life. It’s why I didn’t say anything. But I didn’t know about Charlie. It’s why I left. I won’t allow him to hurt her or me ever again.” Bella looked at Charlie to back up her claims. “Isn’t that right?”

Charlie’s eyes were wide with fear as she looked frantically between her mother and father. She licked suddenly dry lips. “I-I . . .” Her eyes filled with tears. “I need Sky.”

Bella was pissed. She balled her fists upon her hips. “I’m here. You’re father’s here. What do you need her for?”

“I don’t feel so good.”

Remington went to her then. He sat down on the bed accidentally sitting on her leg.

Charlie yelled out. “Ow!”

Remington immediately hopped up. “You felt that?”

Tears were streaming down her face. “Yes.”

Charlie realized it at the exact moment a medical transport team entered the room. “We are here to prepare Ms. Charlie Kneeland for transport.”

Chapter 23

“This is crazy.” Sky rested her head on the back of the sofa. She was exhausted from going over every detail she could remember from the time she received the first phone call from Noah until today with Nia. They had gone over everything she could think of over the course of several days. “There is nothing else, Nia.”

“You better hope there is. Without your notes from that night, this case is ugly.”

“But, not impossible.”

“Only until it’s possible. Let’s just hope that’s before the court date.”

That quote was one Sky and Nia used a lot to encourage each other when they were trying to get through medical and law school.

“Have you talked to Remington?” Nia asked.

Sadness fell over Sky’s face. “I’ve left him about a hundred messages. He hasn’t responded to any of them.”

“It’s only been a few days. When he’s had enough time to think things through, hopefully, he’ll give you an opportunity to explain.”

“Explain what exactly? I mean, I think he knows me well enough to know, that entire Kane storyline is just that. A lie. But, I should have told him. I went back and forth over it in my mind a dozen times.”

“I thought it was a million?” Nia smiled.

“I wish I could just talk to him. Explain my side. Then, I think, really? If Charlie was my daughter, I never would forgive me.”

“Forgiveness is weird when you are in love.”

“Maybe. But, Remington and I aren’t in love love. I mean, we weren’t dating long enough for that, but I think there was something special there.”

“There you go being all rational when love is everything but. You can fall in love in a matter of moments.”

Sky shook her head. “I don’t believe in insta-love.”

“Really? So, you can’t stop thinking about him? Your heart beats out of your chest when he’s around? You would sacrifice anything for him and Charlie? You are not eating or sleeping? So, what exactly would you call that?”

“Stressed the fuck out.”

“That might be true, but it doesn’t cover how Remington makes you feel.”

Realization hit Sky like a ton of bricks. She chewed on her bottom lip. “It’s impossible.”

“It’s only impossible until it’s possible. There’s no controlling love.” Nia thought about her own screwed up love life. “Seems like somebody should invent a pill for that shit. If they could, I would have
