Wolf: SBMC Maryland, стр. 24

for me to see but not touch. Bastard. I’ve tried to play the sweet card. I’ve gone the sexy route. Nothing works. He just ignores me and continues on with his day.

“Wolf said you might want to talk to your friend,” the girl that just walked in the room says holding a phone in her hand. Hell, I could call for help! This is the best thing to happen to me in days.

“I would. Thank you,” I say quickly as I shift and sit up. With one arm connected to the damn headboard it’s hard to move around. I hold out my free hand for the phone, but the girl just smiles.

“That’s not gonna happen.”

“Come on! He has me cuffed to the bed,” I whine.

“Yeah well. You should be thankful for that.”

“Why? I’m being held against my will.”

“Wolf isn’t the type to just hold onto a girl. Lauren the uptight pencil pusher is the very first that he’s kept around. Aside from you.”

“What does that even mean?” I ask not getting her point.

“What I mean is, if Wolf has kept you around, there’s a reason. He doesn’t typically get into relationships,” she says looking a little lost. Oh my God. This girl has a crush on him. And here I am cuffed to his bed. Isn’t this ironic.

“I’m sorry.” She looks up at me and smiles.

“Once a club whore always a club whore. Anyway, he said I could call her and only her for you.”

“What’s your name?”

“Sugar.”

“Thanks, Sugar.” She nods and presses the dial button, putting the phone on speaker.

“Hello?”

“Ester! Oh my god I miss you,” I whine.

“Where the hell are you? I thought you were fucking dead, Krista! I’ve been panicking but I knew I couldn’t go to the cops.”

“I’m fine. Things…well, they happened. I’m staying with Wolf for a while,” I tell her. She laughs into the phone getting an eye roll from me. She would laugh at that.

“So the Wolfman hasn’t let you out of sight huh, little red riding hood.” Sugar snorts a laugh and I smile too.

“Something like that. I just wanted to let you know that I’m fine.”

“Good. Call when you can.” The line goes dead and so does a piece of my heart. I feel like I’m letting her deal with life on her own when she’s here because of me.

“Thank you for that,” I say nodding toward the phone.

“Wasn’t me. It was all Wolf.” She turns and leaves the room leaving me in silence yet again. It isn’t long before I hear people yelling. I close my eyes and try to drown them all out but when the door flies open, I jolt.

“What the hell?” I snap looking up into the face of a very angry Wolf. He slams the door closed, pacing the floor in front of the bed. I watch him, the way his muscles coil. The way his jaw tics.

“Everything is fuckin’ up,” he grumbles under his breath.

“What?”

“Shut up, Krista.”

“No. What the hell is happening? I’m chained to a bed!”

“I need to think. Just shut the fuck up, Krista!” he snaps once more. Like hell I will.

“Let me off this goddamn bed! I’m sick of being here with you!” I yell louder. Wolf turns to me, his eyes so dark that I can’t tell their color anymore. He moves quickly, pulling a set of keys from his pocket before unlocking the cuff on my wrist. In seconds, I’m off the bed and heading toward the door when it hits me.

“Why did you do that?”

“I have way too much shit goin’ on in my head to listen to you too, Krista. Get the fuck outta here,” he hisses without ever looking over at me. I reach for the doorknob but for some stupid reason, look back over my shoulder. Tension has his muscles bulging, flexing. But when he tips his head back, like he’s trying to control himself, I stop. I turn and walk toward him slowly, wrapping my hands around his waist and hugging him from behind.

“What the fuck are you doin’?”

“Hugging you.”

“I said get the fuck outta here,” he growls once more but I just hold him tighter. His abs flex under my hands, his breathing becoming a little slower. Slowly, very slowly he begins to relax under my touch.

“I don’t know what’s happening but I’m sorry.”

“Why? Why the fuck are you sorry?” I slowly move around him, slipping under his arm but never breaking my hold on him. Looking up at him, he looks stressed. He looks unsettled and for some reason that bothers me. His head lowers so he can look me in the eye and I nearly cry for him. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the haunted look in his eyes, or the fact that he seems to be carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. His hands slowly come up and rest on my shoulders. A jolt of electricity shoots through me.

“You look upset,” I say softly.

“I told you to leave,” he says.

“I know. I’m kind of stubborn,” I tell him earning a small grin. I’ll take it.

“That part I already know,” he says reaching up to brush my hair from my face.

“Then it wasn’t a surprise,” I tease wiggling my eyebrows. Wolf chuckles.

“There’s a lot of shit goin’ on. I can’t tell you most of it but…I don’t know, Krista. I feel like I could tell you every secret I have, and you’d understand.”

“Is that so bad?”

“Yeah, it is. My life isn’t easy, babe. Nothin’ about what I do is. You’re fightin’ your own demons and I can’t see draggin’ you into mine.”

“That makes no sense, Wolf. You know that right?” He chuckles again. God, that smile of his is something I could get used to.

“The shit I do is illegal. The shit I will be doin’ is even worse. You don’t deserve to be a part of that shit. The more I’ve thought about it, the more I know you need to go home, Krista.” Well if that
