Star Gods, стр. 30

at the same time. “You’re a Luminary Guard? What the hell, Abby?”

“I’m sorry, I couldn’t tell you.”

“You’re from their planet?” Sage asks. “Your staff is the same as the Assassins.”

Abby shakes her head. “No, they’re similar.” She leans it forward. “Different markings.”

“If you’re from their planet, why aren’t your eyes violet?”

Abby uses two fingers to pull something from one eye then flicks it at Ashe. “Colored contacts. I was supposed to only observe and protect when needed, but your knucklehead brother had to go and put the only means of communication between the Head Assassin, and two worse than Satan, back together. Now they know where we are.”

“They already knew, Abby,” I say.

Ashe shifts and scowls. “But you’re female,” he interrupts.

Abby’s eyes roll before she bats her lashes at him. “Well, thanks for noticing, Ashe.” A haze covers her and she’s back in her jeans and Book Nook t-shirt.

“You know what I mean.”

“What does he mean?” Sage whispers into my ear.

“Female Star Gods have no abilities,” I whisper back.

“Oh, yeah, Tyce mentioned that before but, I’m a female Star God,” Sage responds pointing at her own chest. “Well, half Star God.”

“You’re a fraternal twin, same as me,” Abby says. “Fraternal Star God twins have abilities. We can talk about Ally later. Right now we have to get rid of that staff before Levi and Levia show up here.”

“Ally, as in a female twin?” Tyce questions.

“Yes. Stop focusing on that and help me with that staff.”

“Now you’re really confusing me.” Ashe rubs the top of his head. “Abby, who and what are you?”

“Really?” she answers with annoyance. “Do you not hear my words right now? Levi and Levia are the worse Assassins in existence. With Levi’s staff being here, they now have a one-way ticket straight into your home. If we want to try and stay alive, we need to get rid of that staff.”

“No,” Ashe disagrees. “Zeke’s not reacting to it anymore so we have it contained and no one has even attempted to get inside our wards. We’re safe.” He takes the staff from Sage and places it into the closet, closing the door. He points at me. “You’re going to stay away from it. Understood?”

I nod. “Yeah.”

“I mean it, Zeke.”

“I know, I hear you, Ashe, I’m not deaf.”

He gives me a look of annoyance before turning back to Abby. “Abby, I’m utterly confused. Why are you here and why didn’t you tell me?”

She huffs a breath. “Ashe. I’m Luminary Guard, sent here to observe and protect your brother and sister. We weren’t able to find Sage on our own. I couldn’t find her until Zeke did.”

“That’s what Neil meant,” I mutter under my breath and Abby looks questionably at me.

“Yeah, see that’s another part I’m not understanding,” Ashe says placing his hands on his hips. “If you were sent here to protect these two, why didn’t you protect Zeke from getting hurt the first time?”

She scowls. “He was at school. I can’t just drop in on humans and stop all fights from happening. That would draw attention to us.”

Ashe takes a step and leans forward, his face inches from hers. “Zeke was attacked through a message, Abby, not by a human.”

Her expression skewers up. “A message?” She turns to me. “What kind of message?”

“Usually from a Luminary, until now,” I answer. “Neil stated he didn’t know who they were, but they have the ability to tap into messages and cause me harm.”

“I thought you had precognition?”

“What’s precognition?”

“The ability to see the future,” Sage answers. “Can you do that?”

I shake my head. Sage looks disappointed and Abby looks concerned. “I only receive messages from Luminary Star Gods.”

“And you said Neil came to you?” Abby asks.

“Yes, three times,” I answer guardedly. “You know him?”

“Yes. What did Neil say to you?”

“He initially came and told me I had to find Sage without any help from Ashe, Tyce, or any Star God.”

“Which goes against code,” Ashe adds.

She starts pacing. “Something must’ve happened for him to come to you instead of me. Have you contacted any other Star God or Luminary?”

“No, I didn’t know if we could trust anyone.” Ashe sits on the end of the couch. “You need to tell us what else you know, Abby. You clearly know something.”

She continues pacing. “About a year ago an event occurred raising questions between the ranks. The event isn’t important right now, but it sent up enough of a red flag others started questioning this individual’s actions. Your dad was the one who went to our Luminesce with this concern.” Her expression turns sympathetic. “He never made it. It’s the last time any of us saw your dad.”

“Mom was with him,” I say. “Where is she?”

She lifts a hand with an emblem tattooed to her palm I hadn’t seen before. “Your mom is fine and is being protected and misses all of you. I can’t tell you where she is right now—it isn’t safe for her if I tell you. As far as anyone knows on planet, your mom died. It needs to remain that way until this situation is remedied.”

“You have our mom and you expect us to accept that without seeing her? What the hell is wrong with you?”

“Ashe, please, there is only so much I can tell you.”

“I’ve been hearing that a lot lately and I’m getting sick of it.”

Tyce leans forward and rests a hand on Ashe’s shoulder. “You swear she’s okay?”

“I promise you on my life, your mom is safe and unharmed.”

“The situation is Sage and me, isn’t it?”

“Zeke, put that aside for the time being, we all need to work together. This is escalating much more quickly than any of us anticipated.” Her eyes settle on Ashe and I can see the concern rise. “What did your dad tell you about twins from our planet?”

“Not much about the males, but Dad told me the female of fraternal twins possesses an extractor ability.”

“Your dad was preparing you.” She sighs long and deep, sitting cross-legged on the floor and stretching
